Manchester United have goalkeeper problems ahead of their Premier League match with Liverpool as David de Gea has suffered an injury.
De Gea picked up an apparent groin problem while playing for Spain during Tuesday’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Sweden. Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since confirmed to Sky Sports that the 28-year-old will miss Sunday’s game at Old Trafford.
“David needs a scan,” Solskjaer said. “I think he’ll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s just one of those things.”
BBC Sport reports that Sergio Romero is likely to replace De Gea against the Reds. Yet if the injury proves to be long-term, could Solskjaer consider recalling Dean Henderson from his loan at Sheffield United?
How David de Gea injury could affect the Blades
Henderson is currently on a season-long loan at Bramall Lane. The 22-year-old rejoined the Blades following their promotion to the top flight after an excellent first campaign in South Yorkshire.
Henderson kept more clean sheets than any other ‘keeper in the Championship in 2018/19 with 21, earning him the golden glove award.
Chris Wilder made no secret of the fact he wanted to bring the England Under-21 international back for this term. Yet Henderson is a confident individual and believes he should already be in the Man United first team.
“Do I think I should be playing at Manchester United now? Yes I do,” he told the Daily Mail in June.
“I think I am good enough and I would help the team a lot, in a positive way.
“I would give my right leg to play for that football club.
“That has been my dream since I was a little boy, being a fan. I just know I’m working hard in the background and waiting for any little opportunity that comes up. If it does, I will take it for the next 10 to 15 years.”
Details of Henderson’s loan agreement have not been made public, but under new guidelines the earliest he could be recalled is January. Even then, that would only be if a recall clause was agreed in advance.
So don’t fear Blades fans, Henderson will be at the club until the New Year at least. Hopefully De Gea will be back and fit by then in any case.
